Sterling [1975]
Sure we never played out, but this was my first band! I think we were called Sterling, though Gunnion (far right) swears we were called Aquarium Thought Destiny.
Not sure the name matters as we never set foot outside the drummer's house--except for a rehearsal in Mark's basement (see photo).
Practices were fun: drummer Dave Scally was known to set off homemade flash pots and I would wear my father's priest robe.
Lead guitarist Dan Best was the oldest member and had a super-cool Fender Duo-Sonic. He favored Allman Brothers pentatonic licks, while the rest of us were a little more pop rock and hard rock.
Gunnion and I are still besties, but Dan Best is lost to the ages - blues box solos, blonde bangs and all. I heard he went in to the military. In 2017 I got back in touch with Dave Scally, who now lives in Austin, TX. Forty years on he is no worse for wear, a ranked triathlete and musician with monster chops and LA stories to tell.

1975 has me rockin' earth shoes and the Harmony bass I'd recently bought from Brian Shaw
